The Prez Sez

Hard to believe that this month is the last meeting for our organization year! My how time flies. We have had a productive and exciting year of art creation, competitions, and fabulous demos at our regular meetings! I would like to again thank Linda and Kristin Dumas for the April demo – it was exciting, motivating and just plain fun! The Spring Show was a great success with sales that increased our donation amount for the next year’s scholarship fund which means we can offer an amount that can truly make a difference in the art education of the recipient. Congratulations to all the ribbon winners and good luck at the LSAG show in June. In conclusion, I would like to thank the members and especially my Board members for your support in my year as President. I couldn’t have done it without all of you. I hope to see you all at this month’s meeting. If not, enjoy the Summer season, be safe and Paint, Paint, Paint!!!

Marty Caldwell is a Decorative and Fine Art Painter and Instructor with a passion for painting. Her painting career began many years ago with a winning piece of art in the third grade. This passion for painting has led her to many areas of the decorative art and painting world. Now she enjoys in sharing through teaching, designing, and being with fellow artists and students!

She is an active member of the Society of Decorative Painters with membership in two Houston, Texas area chapters, Decorative Painting Pals of Texas – Humble, TX and Decorative Artists of Texas – Pasadena, TX . She served as President of the Decorative Painting Pals of Texas in 2007. And She is also a member and past president of the Liberty Art League in Liberty, TX.

Art Tip of the Month  

Acrylic Paint Removal – In my many years of teaching acrylics, I always get a dot or two on clothing or the rug. To remove the acrylic, I have found that denatured alcohol with a Q-tip will remove dried paint. Then wash gently with regular soap. You can get this product in the paint department at Walmart or a local paint store.

April’s Demo Recap

Vanita introduced Linda and Kristin Dumas to do the demo on HOW TO GET STARTED, WHEN YOU JUST CANT!  Besides the talk and the “doing”, Linda had a nice many paged hand-out for all of us.  It was very enlightening, with a lot of questions and inter-play with the members.  Thank you Linda and Kristin.

General Meetings March 16, 2015

The topic for our Demonstration at this week’s March General Meeting has changed.

We will welcome our new Demo Artists, Kathleen Earthrowl, who will show us her techniques for ‘Sensory Art’

SENSORY PAINTINGS

Sensory Art is a process that evolves from within and drives the creation of a work of art. It requires listening to one’s self and one’s senses, as in poetry (or other media) where words bubble up from within creating a poem. Sensory images within trigger the artist to paint from their inner sensory being.

The Sensory Process applies to all art forms, music, dance, drama, writing, and more. It is an internal experience, an intuitive path with often an external reference.

A painting can start one way and end very differently. I say that paintings have a mind of their own!.  The sensory process is letting it happen, allowing your senses to lead you on a trip, taking a risk. The artist must let go of trying to control and get out of the way.

I say that my paintings lead and I follow, meaning that I allow my heart, gut, my senses to lead.  It’s an improvisation, exciting, stimulating and energizing. It’s like choreographing a dance or playing Jazz.

Nature is a rich inspiration for me. The rough and tough, serene and sublime of nature is moving, calming, spectacular, and triggers the sensory experience.

March General Meeting

Creative Challenge, General Meetings, Shows & Competitions March 4, 2015

The Prez Sez…

Our February General Meeting was very fun. We had and artist from Jerry’s Artarama come for the demo hour. He brought great door prizes and other new products that he introduced us to. He then painted an entire acrylic painting using some impasto techniques along with the acrylics. He was very entertaining, funny and talented. You can see the finished painting on the website or on our Facebook page. I encourage all members to try to attend the General Meeting each month. It is fun and very motivating. We have had a series of fantastic artists this year so far and I’m looking forward to the next meeting.

The General Meeting is one of the best reasons to join the group as it affords us the opportunity to meet together and visit as well as receive instruction in art forms that we love or those we aren’t as familiar with. Please mark your calendars for the 3rd Tuesday of each month!!!

The date for our Spring Show has been finalized for April 18th and it will be held at the Kingwood Christian Church on W. Lake Houston Parkway as the Homewood Suites will be in the midst of a remodel at that time. The Prospectus for the show will be posted on the website soon.

Art Tip of the Month

Mirror corrector – When you know there is “something wrong” with a painting but you can’t figure out what, try looking at it in a mirror. Perspective problems and portrait problems show up immediately. If working from life, use a hand held mirror to look over your shoulder at the painting. If you are at home in the studio, you can take your painting to a larger mirror such as a bathroom mirror.

The Prez Sez…

I am very excited this month about the continuing interest in our society by new artists in the area. We have had several new members join this year!! We welcome them and are excited to see how their creative ideas will influence our group. The Board needs several positions filled for next year as there are committee members who will not be returning next year. Please consider volunteering your time and talents to help our group continue to be viable and successful. The only way our group can move forward is if the members are willing to step up and take an interest in making that happen!! Vanita will not be returning and Carol Showalter will need a new partner for the Demo position. We also need people to be on the Artwork Hanging Committee as Carita and Randi are also giving up those positions. We need someone to take the Facilities position and a few others. Please email me or one of the other Board members if you are interested in shadowing them to get familiar with the position before actually taking over. This is the best time to do that as they will be able to train you ‘on the job’ so to speak. Being on the Board is a fun and rewarding way of serving our wonderful society – don’t be afraid to try.

February’s Demo – Daniel Elliot from Jerry’s Artarama

Daniel studied Painting and Illustration at the University Of Connecticut School Of Fine Arts from 1990 to 1996. After college, Daniel having such an outgoing personality entered into corporate America, for the most part spent his time climbing the management ladder. But, at the end of the day Daniel was an artist at heart and he came back to his true calling. He is truly an artist and his work has evolved into his own unique style.

He uses texture and color in amazing ways to make his concepts literally come to life as they jump off the canvas. His paintings have been displayed in numerous galleries for solo and group exhibitions. He has many collectors both nationally and internationally, including corporate installations and commissioned work. Daniel currently teaches acrylic fundamentals and mixed media painting in group and private lessons, workshops and at Jerry’s Artarama in Houston, TX

The topic for February’s CC is Frozen.

Art Tip of the Month

For photographing artwork use a white sheet pinned to a wall outside. Hang the painting or put it on an easel in front of the wall. Mount the camera on a tripod. Then pull the sheet over you, the painting and the camera, using the sheet as a giant lightbox for even bright lighting. Convenient and inexpensive.

January Recap

Many thanks to our member Greg C. for generously offering a wonderful selection of his pressed leaves & flowers at the January meeting. Members were free to take what they wanted from his stash.

Golda Rader gave us a wonderful demonstration of Zentangles at our January Demo. Members were given tiles and a pen so they could participate with Golda during the demo.

Artwork Displays, Creative Challenge, General Meetings January 14, 2015

 The Prez Sez…

Happy New Year!!! New years always feel like new beginnings and can be very motivating. Hopefully you all made a New Year’s Resolution to paint more!! It is good for us to set goals because we give ourselves a target to reach for. For painting, keep it simple!! Choose some aspect of art or technique that is maybe giving you trouble or that you’d like to know more about and work to master it. Our Spring Show is in April, so now is the time to plan ahead with an April target for completion. You can’t use up Creativity. The more you use, the more you have!! Since we didn’t have a regular meeting last month, don’t forget that the Creative Challenge for this month is Reflections. I look forward to seeing how you interpret that theme. I will see you all at the meeting on January 20th.

Demo for January General Meeting

GOLDA RADER CDA/CZT – “Collage/Zentangles”
Golda is a Certified Decorative Artist and a Certified Zentangle teacher.  She has taught design and published for over 20 years.  She is a member of DPPT in Humble, TX and a teacher at the Conroe Art League. Golda currently has a new book with Laurie Speltz called “Tangled Together’. For more information on Zentangle classes and video classed, please see the Raderizms on Facebook, Pinterest and Blogspot.

Community Art Displays

The dates for the artwork change-out at the Library and Cafe Du Bois have been set:

• Wednesday, January 284th at 10:30am at the Kingwood Library
• Thursday, January 29th at 2:45pm at Cafe du Bois

LHAA members who volunteer their time will have the opportunity to have their artwork selected to hang in our scheduled hangings at the Kingwood Library and/or Café du Bois at the discretion of our Community Art Display Chairs.

LHAA Presents Scholarship

On December 9th The Lake Houston Area Artists and guests gathered for a holiday celebration and delicious dinner at the Café du Bois Restaurant. The occasion was the presentation of the 2014 LHAA scholarship award to Luis Aleman, an art student studying at Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Luis is focusing on the Graphic Design Field. The LHAA Scholarship judges (Sheila Bridges, Linda Hamilton and Kristin Dumas) were impressed with Luis’s ability to handle a variety of subject matter and express themes in a creative way. Skillful handling of the challenging mediums of graphite and charcoal in his work create a large range of values from light to dark.

Luis is a young man with his eye on the future. In his spare time he has been self- studying the Japanese language. His goal is to become a comic book author, and be the illustrator for his own stories.
