 The Prez Sez…

Happy New Year!!! New years always feel like new beginnings and can be very motivating. Hopefully you all made a New Year’s Resolution to paint more!! It is good for us to set goals because we give ourselves a target to reach for. For painting, keep it simple!! Choose some aspect of art or technique that is maybe giving you trouble or that you’d like to know more about and work to master it. Our Spring Show is in April, so now is the time to plan ahead with an April target for completion. You can’t use up Creativity. The more you use, the more you have!! Since we didn’t have a regular meeting last month, don’t forget that the Creative Challenge for this month is Reflections. I look forward to seeing how you interpret that theme. I will see you all at the meeting on January 20th.

LHAA Presents Scholarship

On December 9th The Lake Houston Area Artists and guests gathered for a holiday celebration and delicious dinner at the Café du Bois Restaurant. The occasion was the presentation of the 2014 LHAA scholarship award to Luis Aleman, an art student studying at Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Luis is focusing on the Graphic Design Field. The LHAA Scholarship judges (Sheila Bridges, Linda Hamilton and Kristin Dumas) were impressed with Luis’s ability to handle a variety of subject matter and express themes in a creative way. Skillful handling of the challenging mediums of graphite and charcoal in his work create a large range of values from light to dark.

Luis is a young man with his eye on the future. In his spare time he has been self- studying the Japanese language. His goal is to become a comic book author, and be the illustrator for his own stories.

The Prez Sez

Tinsel, bows and wrapping paper, busy malls and the fragrance of pine and cinnamon, the Nutcracker and that jolly man in a red velvet suit. Must be Christmas!! Tis the season for family, food and fun – I hope you all get just what you asked for from St. Nick. Mostly I hope you will have a wonderful time with family and friends at this special time of year. I would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate the ribbon winners from our Fall Show. I continue to be impressed and inspired by the wonderful art that is created by the members of our group! I know you are all now in the midst of creating some new, exciting paintings to enter in the Spring Show. There will be no regular meeting this month as we will be having the Scholarship Dinner instead. I hope you will all be able to attend. It is very rewarding for our group to be able to aid a future artist even in a small way. So until next year, enjoy your families, unwrap lots of goodies and paint every chance you get. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Holiday Dinner

For those who RSVP’ed, just a reminder that we will be dining at Cafe du Bois, and dinner starts 7pm! We will be presenting the LHAA Student Scholarship to the winner from Lone Star College at this time.

Art Tip of the Month

Value does all the work, but Color gets all the credit. This is an artistic truth we all know, but sometimes forget about in the frenzy of creation. In order to be more aware of the value of Value I suggest the following tip: Before adding the finishing touches to your artwork, take a picture with your digital camera using the black and white setting, or change it to black and white on your computer. You’ll be able to quickly judge if your values are correct.

You can also make a simple value viewer by cutting a small piece of white card stock or other heavy paper into about a 2″x2″  square, then punch a hole in the center. Make 2 and use one on your reference photo and one on your painting to check not only value, but also for correct color.

November Meeting recap

Thank you Deborah Hill for introducing us to your unique style and to a wide range of new projects. Perhaps those in our groups who tries out these techniques will be willing to show off their creations!

October General Meeting

The Prez Sez…

Ghost, Goblins and Princesses oh my!!! The holiday season is fast approaching with Halloween being the beginning and that means our first show is right around the corner. I hope everyone is busy finishing up on their entries for the November show which will be Nov. 15th at Homewood Suites. We are hoping for record entries this year so get busy in the studio!! I think the new show venue will give our art work more exposure to the public which could lead to more sales.

At the beginning of our new year, I need to remind all members to get their dues to Linda Achard as soon as possible. Your dues ensure you are eligible to enter the shows, hang your artwork at the library and Café du Bois and continuing attendance at the general meetings. It also helps Linda with the bookkeeping so please bring your check to this month’s meeting or mail it to her this week.

Our meeting is Oct. 21st and I’m looking forward to seeing you all there.

Demo for October

Bob Shepherd,”Shep” will demo “Paint Like A Venetian”, using Old Masters technique. You can see his artwork on his website, Portraits by Shep, and also sign up to follow his blog.
