Changeout of Art at Kingwood Public Library Has Been Postponed
Due to personal commitments, our Art Display Chair, Jeran Walker, has been forced to resign her position. Therefore we have postponed the changing of the art display at Kingwood Public Library until another person volunteers to take over the post. If any of you would be interested in this position, please let us know!
Creative Challenge For Spring
Our new Creative Challenge for Spring is, appropriately enough, Spring Without the Green. So, a Spring theme with NO green used! Entries will be due in May, and the prize this time is a $50 Jerry’s Artarama certificate! Now is the time to Think Spring!
February Demo Artist: Melanie Wade Leslie – Part 2 – How to Incorporate Photo Transfers Into Mixed Media
Due to a family emergency, Sheila Stoll will not be able to do her art demo at our February meeting. In her place, Melanie Wade Leslie, who was last October’s demo artist, will continue her demonstration. In Part 2 she will concentrate on incorporating photo transfers into your mixed media art.
Melanie Wade Leslie A native Texan, Melanie holds academic degrees from Sam Houston State University (BFA – Painting) and the University of Houston (MFA – Studio Art) and has been an active artist and educator for many years. Under her tutelage, her students have consistently benefited from her teaching, many earning awards and accolades for their work at regional, state and national levels.
Apart from her life as an educator, she has exhibited her printmaking work professionally in international group exhibitions across the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, India, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany and England. Her mixed media work has been exhibited in Texas, New Jersey, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Kentucky.
ARTIST STATEMENT: Melanie Wade Leslie is an experimental cross-media artist and printmaker with an affinity for color and texture. Her work has evolved over the past two and a half decades into more experimental combinations of drawing, painting and printmaking media, frequently embodying the historically iconic and metaphorically rich imagery of the horse. Focusing upon the unique and universal attributes of legendary equus, Melanie pursues an expressive manifestation of symbolic echoes, germinated out of inter-species collaboration that invites a dialog with the human spirit.

SHEILA BUCCHINO STOLL – SMASHING GOOD FUN!
Breaking things isn’t always bad! Like they say, “One gals trash is another gals treasure!” How true this has been for me in my art-making experience. I use a wide range of materials in my work and most if it comes from our recycle bin, broken household items and even the side of the road. Nothing is beyond my scope when it comes to inspiration and breathing new life into discarded items is a real pleasure of mine.
Tonight we’re going to explore the glass smashing art experience of mosaic. Using a variety of glass and ceramic materials, we will design a collaborative piece together and discuss the basics of mosaic art. I will discuss choosing a substrate, which adhesive is best for those substrates, how to mix and use thinset mortar and grout and introduce the tools that are needed to get started making mosaic art. I have a few resource materials that will help you remember the tools and techniques that we will cover tonight, so don’t worry, I got you covered!
Speaking of covered, I’ve also provided gloves, safety goggles and masks. I will make every attempt at teaching you how to stay safe while you’re being wild and crazy smashing things around your house.
Coming in April – A New Art Show – People’s Choice!
This April, in addition to our Spring Art Show and Competition, we will be presenting a new “People’s Choice” Art Show at the Lake Houston YMCA. The show will be a one-day show on Friday, April 14, 2023 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Bring in your artwork that you want to display – any age (as long as it’s “family friendly”). People entering and leaving will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite, and the lucky winning artist will receive a $25 prize! Please include your contact information so that anyone who is interested in buying your work can get in touch with you. LHAA collects a 10% commission on any art sales resulting from one of our displays or shows. Be sure to keep that in mind when pricing your work. Prices won’t appear on the work itself; you can give that information when buyers contact you.
You can drop off your art for this show at the Y either Friday morning from 8:00 to 10:00 am or Thursday evening from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Take down and art pickup will be Friday evening from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
Spring 2023 Art Show and Competition
Our Spring Art Show will be Saturday, April 22, 2023. As always, we will send you the show prospectus and poster and help you with registration. Watch this space!
Kingwood Public Library Art Changeout
We will be changing out the artwork at the Kingwood Public Library on Friday, February 24, 2023 at 11:00 am. Any paid member who has helped us in the past (or is willing to help with the changeout on this day) is eligible to bring in their art for display. Just be sure the piece is ready to hang, with picture wire. Help us keep the display fresh, with new things for library patrons to look at!
January Demo Artist: Marcela Lugones Daneri – Mixed Media
Marcela Lugones Daneri is a mixed media artist currently living in Houston, Texas. She was born in Argentina but has spent most of her life living and traveling the world including Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, as well as North and South America. It is this global culture which gives rich layers to her life as well as her art.
Her approach is intuitive, layering collage, acrylics, inks, pastels and charcoal to convey her ideas in visual form. As an accomplished photographer she uses her own photographs for inspiration. Marcela’s relationship with color is deep and personal and brings a vibrant life to each piece
Library Art Hanging
Our next art changeout at the Kingwood Public Library will be on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. As always, any paid member who has helped out in some way (helping with the art hanging counts) is eligible to bring some pieces of artwork for display in the library. Be sure your art is ready to hang, with picture wire.
The library is a great place for the public to see your work. We do need to change the wall from time to time to keep it looking fresh and interesting. We are planning to switch the art in the library every 3 months or so. If you have business cards, bring a few with you so the prospective buyers can get in touch.
Future Art Displays
Our chair in charge of public art displays, Jeran Walker, would like to update the folder of artwork by current members so that she can more easily arrange for our creations to be shown at other locations. To that end, she would appreciate it if any interested members would put together a page containing a short artist bio and a few examples of some of your best work. Print out the sheet and bring it to a meeting for Jeran. If you can’t print your sheet in color, just email it to amymcleod.conroy@gmail.com.
Creative Challenge
Were you having such a great holiday season that you didn’t have time to work on the Creative Challenge? Good news! The Creative Challenge has been moved back a bit – to the February General Meeting. Remember, there is a $25 prize for the winner. The theme of this Creative Challenge is Opposites.
Spring 2023 Art Show and Competition
