Charles Bender Performing Arts Center

For All Artists Who Are Planning to Display Their Art at the Bender Center:

Set-up for the display is Monday, June 10, 2019 at 10:30 a.m.
The pre-showtime hours during which we need to be there are:

Friday, June 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, July 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday, July 12 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Takedown is tentatively scheduled for Monday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m.

Our presence is requested at the pre-show so that we can discuss our art with the public.  This will afford us an excellent opportunity to market our artwork.  If you have unavoidable previous plans that prevent your coming to one of the events, please make sure that someone is there who can answer questions about your work.

Participants should plan on bringing 3-4 art pieces.  That number may need to be adjusted during hanging on June 10, depending on how many total works are there.  There is no harm in having one or two extra artworks on hand in case extra space is available.

We are also encouraged to invite friends and family members to attend one or more of the shows at the Center.  These are musical programs intended to provide an enjoyable evening for the whole family.  You can find the schedule or performances on their website.

The Bender Performing Arts Center is located at:

611 Higgins Street
Humble, TX  77338

As a reminder, to be eligible to hang your art you must be a paid member and have helped us in some way during this season.

If you mean to hang your art here with us, please respond with a phone number at which I can reach you.

Thanks,
Joel Salmons

Art Changeout at Kingwood Public Library

We will be changing the art at Kingwood Public Library on Monday, May 20, 2019.  We will start at 10:30 a.m.  If you have art hanging at the library, be prepared to take it home with you.  If you have helped us as a volunteer during the season you may bring some new pieces to hang.  Remember, your art must be ready to hang, with picture wire – NOT the toothed hangers.

Charles Bender Center for the Performing Arts

During the summer, we will have an opportunity to display our art at the Charles Bender Center in Humble.  All paid members who have served as volunteers in some capacity may bring in art to display.  The work will be on display from June 10 through July 15.  Please keep in mind that we are to be there not only to show our work, but also to help promote the shows at the center!  All displaying artists will be on hand on three evenings (dates TBD) to meet and chat with the public about their art.  This is an excellent setting for selling your art!  But you must be prepared to come to some of these shows to meet the people interested in your work.  Further details will be forthcoming at the May meeting.

May Demo Artist:  Debra Latham

debralathamlhaaDebra Latham, a long time award-winning artist, has her work displayed in public & private collections in the United States and abroad.  Her representational work in rich oils can be described as impressionistic realism with a loose and expressive style — everything from landscape to figurative, plein air to studio pieces.

Debra is a native Texan and much of her inspiration comes from her travels & the family farmhouse in the Texas Hill Country. She teaches oil painting in Kingwood, Texas, where she lives with her husband.  She won her first of many art competitions in the 5th grade. At the age of 12, she received her first commission – to paint a mural on the gym wall of her middle school.  Debra recalls,“The only compensation was to skip basketball practice twice a week.  It was probably best.  I was a better painter than basketball player.”

Debra, a self-taught artist who studied with Jeff Hein, Dan Gerhartz, Rob Liberace, Clayton J. Beck & Jeff Legg, didn’t pursue becoming a professional artist until her 2 children were grown.  She credits her inspirations as John Singer Sargent, Sorolla, Pino, David Leffel, Nydia Lazano, Daniel Gerhartz and Robert Coombs.

Spring Show Entry Deadline

Members

Our Spring Show regular entry price will be in effect until midnight tonight, Wednesday, April 24, 2019.  After that no more entries will be accepted.

Spring Art Show and Competition

Reminder:  Our Spring Art Show is Next Weekend – Saturday, April 27

The deadline for entry into the show is Monday, April 22, with late entries permitted until Wednesday, April 24.  Absolutely no entries accepted after Wednesday!

An extra exciting news item – Jennifer Wooden from the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center will be attending our show!  She wants to see examples of our work before we display them at the Center (date TBD).  So lets show her our best!  Even if you are not entering the show, be sure to bring in something for the gallery presentation, which will be in the same room as show entries.  Bring in as many pieces as you want to the gallery.

You do not need to pre-register or pay in order to display your work in the gallery – just be a paid member who has helped (or is helping) us.  Gallery art will be displayed on the same kind of boards as the show entries, so they DO need to be ready to hang – with wire hangers (not the toothed hangers).  Be sure to include a paper with your name, email, phone number, and any other contact information you want to include.

Early school board voting will be going on at the Kingwood Community Center that day as well, so we have the potential to bring in a lot more visitors!

There are still plenty of small jobs available if you want to help out at the show.  Be sure to check for openings when you bring in your art.  See you next Saturday!

To all Members Who Are Planning to Take Thursday’s Tour

Please DO NOT bring your art to the tour of the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center on Thursday, April 11!  This tour is meant to give us a look at the place where our art will be hanging.  Someone else’s art is there now.  We can better visualize this way how our own paintings will look.  We will find out later when we can bring pictures for display.

To Everyone Who Has Art on Display at Dr. Nunnery’s Office

Dr. Nunnery is moving to a new location, so we need to remove all our art from there for the time being.  Thursday, April 18 at 1:45 p.m. is the day for you to come in to get your paintings.  Dr. Nunnery will let us know if we can bring our pieces back, sometime in June.  Please complete your removal before 4:00 p.m. on that day.

An Amazing New Development

The newly re-opened Lake Houston YMCA has offered us an incredible opportunity!  Starting in May, LHAA will be teaching art classes for children at the Y!  Our own Joel Salmons, who has taught with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., has complete lesson plans for teaching different age groups of children.  The classes will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings (one group on each day) for about an hour each.  We need some volunteers to help with the teaching.  Any amount of time on any of the three days is appreciated.  The lesson plans are great, and the classes should be a lot of fun.  For further information, contact Joel Salmons at:

For All Our Members:

Representatives of the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center in downtown Humble have invited our group to display our art at their center!  We will be meeting at the Center at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 for a tour of the facility.  We will get to see where our art will be hanging.  We will also find our then on what day they would like us to bring in our art pieces.

We want all our members to be involved in this event!  If you have artwork that you would like to display at the center, come join us for the tour!

Humble, TX  77338

We do need to know exactly how many people will be hanging their art at the Center!   Please send a message to our coordinator, Lynda Feierabend at (lynda226@aol.com) if you are interested.

In case you are not familiar with it, the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center used to be the Charles Bender High School.  It was remodeled in 2014, and now, among other things, hosts a monthly concert series for the entire family.  So we will have a lot of viewers for our work, and the potential to make more sales!
