April’s Demo Artist: Holly Nowak – Textured Layering in Paintings

Holly Nowak is a Texas artist who creates in oil, acrylics, watercolor, clay and other mixed media. She is inspired by her love of nature and her bright, whimsical style is deeply rooted in the Texas landscape.

She has carefully curated a home studio where she has taught children and adults for the last ten years. Just outside her studio door she finds inspiration in her gardens along with an array of pets including her flock of hens she fondly refers to as “The Ladies”.

Holly can also be found at her studio in Houston’s Historic Arts District. Holly’s Winter Street Studio is located in one of the countries largest artist communities called Sawyer Yards where she is in the company of over 400 artists. There she hosts monthly events for Collectors and the public as well as teaches her in person workshops.

She discovered her love of teaching within her home studio after leaving a long career to fulfill her lifelong passion for creating art. Ten years later she has honed her skills not only as an artist, but in encouraging and inspiring others to pursue their own creative journey. Holly’s focus is on inspiring other artists to make their own creative space where they can find their voice as an artist and nurture their own creative spirit.

Remember – Our Spring 2025 Art Show and Competition is Saturday, April 26

“My delight in the environment, model or interior landscape being capturing is felt through the nuances of light and color.  I’ve cultivated through a passionate pursuit of working from life a technique that portrays form accurately. You recognize it and take in the commonality of the scene and feel it through your own story.  It is a sweet circle shared.”

November 2024 General Meeting

Our General Meeting for November Will be Tuesday, November 19, 2024

 Meeting Place:
     Homewood Suites
     23320 Hwy 59N
     Kingwood, TX 77339
     6:30pm Meet & Greet
     7:00pm Meeting & Demo

Demo Artist for November Will be Stacy Gresell – Found Object Art

I love objects with multiple personalities- recognizable things that change when incorporated in a piece of artwork.  I see that in my work- where vintage & recycled or found objects suggest one thing while the image may suggest another.  I love how the layering of encaustic wax reflects the light differently depending on your viewpoint- like water and glass do.

I teach communication at a local community college where I encourage students to look at all sides of the story and I believe my artwork does the same.  I am largely a self-taught encaustic painter and I enjoy thinking about the whole piece- the frames in my work, all handmade by me, are usually recycled from some former life and integral to the piece.  I have experience with a wide range of artistic mediums:  lampwork glass, stained glass, oil, acrylic & watercolor painting, jewelry making, silver smithing, sewing, and leather work? and they all end up in a painting at some point.  I teach encaustic classes and work out of my studio in down town Houston in the Sawyer Yards Complex (one of the largest art communities in the US)  -Winter Street Studios A4 which is open for visitors the 2nd Saturday of every month.

Creative Challenge – Patterns

Don’t forget – Your interpretations on the theme “Patterns” are due this meeting. Attendees will vote on the winner. And a new theme will be announced for the next challenge!

Art Show on Saturday

Our 2024 Fall Art Show and Competition is Saturday, November 16. Entries should already be in, but do remember to bring any art pieces you would like to share with us to display in the Community Art Gallery. No pre-registration necessary, and 3D art is accepted as well as 2D.
