The Demo Artist for May Will Be Doug Hiser – Wildlife Art

Doug Hiser grew up in Santa Fe, Texas, chasing snakes and turtles and any other animal he could catch. He was so interested in nature he collected books on all the animal species of the world and read them over and over to learn about them. He hunted and fished but as he grew wiser and older, stopped killing animals and began painting and drawing them and hiking across the world to inspire others to become conservationists and to love the wild world. As a muralist he donates painting to about one in three to organizations like the Audubon Society, Cheetah Conservation Society, Owl conservation, National Wildlife Refuges, and many more.
Judging art shows, art demos and painting murals and public art, among some of the notable pieces, the Santa Fe Indians Ten Feathers mural at City Hall commemorating the people who lost their lives in the tragic event, the Silent Skies mural of endangered Birds, The Houston Audubon fifty foot Bird Mural, Houston Rodeo Boot, “Rodeo Bulls” displayed at NRG stadium and Galveston’s two Turtle Sculptures, Brazoria Nature Center Murals, Mermaid sculptures in San Marcos and Wimberley Boot Public Art.
Library Art Changeout
We will be changing out the art at Kingwood Public Library on Friday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. You should have received an email about this as well. We are asking everyone who won a ribbon at our recent art competition to bring your winning art and ribbon(s) to the library, so we can display your winning work to the public. We are proud of our artists and are looking forward to showing off their art!
As always, any paid member can also bring some pieces of art to share. Be sure that it is completely ready to hang, with picture wire on the back.
Summer Meetings
As we explained previously, we have decided to continue our monthly meetings during the summer months. These meetings will be more like casual workshops, so feel free to come in if you’re in town, and learn with us!
We are also looking at a change of venue, starting in June. We will be conducting meetings at Strawbridge United Methodist Church from now on. It is a very nice location with plenty of room, and the church has generously permitted us the use of their Grand Hall. We will have more information about where to find the church and what door to use very soon.
Each of our summer meetings will focus on a different art discipline. We would appreciate those of you attending to bring some supplies with you, although we will supply some items ourselves. Some items will be things most of us have in our homes.
June 17 – Printing and Scratchboard – suggested supplies:
Clear plastic packaging (flat, smooth surface)
Clean juice containers (foil lined)
Dropcloth
Newsprint
Hand wipes
Apron
July 15 – Portraiture – Bring your own supplies
August 19 – Collage – suggested supplies:
XActo knives
Glue
Scissors
Cutting mats
Any further suggestions will be given nearer to the time of the meeting.
