Rodeo Art on Display Now – Linda Dumas

Kristin (Dumas) and I are steering judges for the School Art Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  This is a most rewarding endeavor, as we get to see hundreds of student artworks, divided by school level and district.  We have had kindergarten work win best of show or gold medal in the local show.  Middle school is steadily improving, despite what you have heard about hormones tamping down the creative urge.  High school!  What can I say?  There are so many pieces that will blow you away in this demonstration of talent and creativity.  Teachers and districts who support art instruction consistently turn in the best work.  Students whose work is accepted for auction receive a significant financial reward, as well as some available college scholarships.  Many others receive scholarships to Glassell or to the Western Art Academy.  The Academy has professional western artists who work with the lucky students for four weeks in a life-changing atmosphere of art immersion and instruction.   In the high school contest,  2D works are classified by colored drawing, painting, mixed media, or monochromatic work. 3D includes sculpture and pottery.  There is a Grand Champion and Reserve Champion over the entire body of entries, as well as a Grand and Reserve Champion in each of the different classes.  Since being included in the rodeo auctions, the school art auction has risen to second place world records consistently, surpassed only by the steer auction.  Last year  no piece sold for less than $10,000, with the top price being over $200,000.  The auction this year will be on March 19.  If you visit the rodeo before this day, check out the Hayloft Gallery and the winners display near the entrance to the exhibit halls. Also, of great interest this year, elementary and middle school Champions and Reserve Champions will be joining the auction.  See some of the pieces at http://www.rodeohouston.com/Educational-Support/School-Art-Program.  If you are interested in judging, you must join the rodeo and apply to the school art committee.  It is a tremendously rewarding job.
