Demo Artist for November Will be Stacy Gresell – Found Object Art

I love objects with multiple personalities- recognizable things that change when incorporated in a piece of artwork.  I see that in my work- where vintage & recycled or found objects suggest one thing while the image may suggest another.  I love how the layering of encaustic wax reflects the light differently depending on your viewpoint- like water and glass do.

I teach communication at a local community college where I encourage students to look at all sides of the story and I believe my artwork does the same.  I am largely a self-taught encaustic painter and I enjoy thinking about the whole piece- the frames in my work, all handmade by me, are usually recycled from some former life and integral to the piece.  I have experience with a wide range of artistic mediums:  lampwork glass, stained glass, oil, acrylic & watercolor painting, jewelry making, silver smithing, sewing, and leather work? and they all end up in a painting at some point.  I teach encaustic classes and work out of my studio in down town Houston in the Sawyer Yards Complex (one of the largest art communities in the US)  -Winter Street Studios A4 which is open for visitors the 2nd Saturday of every month.

Creative Challenge – Patterns

Don’t forget – Your interpretations on the theme “Patterns” are due this meeting. Attendees will vote on the winner. And a new theme will be announced for the next challenge!

Our Demo Artist for October Will Be: Gretchen Sparks – Oil Pastel on Sandpaper

Gretchen worked as a geologist after earning her Bachelors and Master’s in Geology. Since 2015, she has been participating in juried art competitions, often featuring her experience and appreciation for geology and biology in her work. She works in acrylic, ceramic, chalk pastel, and oil pastel on sandpaper.

“I am incorporating the techniques I developed doing field Geology into my art. My art comes from the direct result of my physical involvement with the landscape (field work) interpreted in the studio (lab work). I strive to move past what is observed in the landscape – to lose the feeling of place – and to use my art to translate the landscape into a narrative or anecdote for others. The landscape, correctly interpreted, will make the soul flow. My goal is to bring the artist into the landscape without abandoning the perception of the scientist.”
