The Prez Sez
Our new year is flashing past too quickly. The Spring Show is just around the corner on April 23rd at the Kingwood Christian Church. I hope everyone is putting the finishing touches on your latest masterpieces! In order the help our Show Committee, please remember that all art work has to have a wire and be framed securely, and that you must have paid your dues before show entry. If you would like to help with set up or take down, please get in touch with Becky or Amy – they would appreciate any help you can give. There is a lot of hard work that goes into putting on the shows, so our membership needs to recognize the need to step up and help out when it’s possible. I will be doing the Demo for March, and need to remind you all to bring an electric or battery operated pencil sharpener. I will be demoing Colored Pencil Techniques and there will be audience participation. Come prepared to learn by doing this month!

Creative Challenge – Meditations in Red
Congratulations to Jenny Grigg as our Creative Challenge winner for February!
The Creative Challenge theme for March is: Geometrics – The Shape of Things.
We want to give our members a say in determining our Creative Challenge theme. So we will be asking for ideas to be submitted at the next meeting, with the final choice being made by a random draw. We are looking forward to hearing your ideas!
February Demo – Hands-on Fiber Art
Thanks to Gika Rector for a terrific hands-on demo of fiber arts! Everyone had fun, learned a lot and got to bring home a personal piece of fiber art!
Our Demo for March: Debra Jones, Colored Pencils for Portraits
Debra studied fine art painting at the Baton Rouge Academy of Fine Arts. Shortly after school, she moved to Washington state where she painted and taught for 23 years. She taught art at the elementary and middle school levels for 10 years and opened her own art school where she taught privately for another 15 years before retiring and returning to Texas. Debra paints in most mediums, both wet and dry. When asked what her favorite is her answer is, “Whatever I’m working in at the time!” These days she mostly focuses on painting in Watercolor, Pastels and Colored Pencil. She is a firm believer that when it comes to art, we learn by doing and is open to any new experience in painting. She invites you to adopt her own personal motto – Don’t Be Afraid To Be Bold!!
The Demo will demonstrate the use of colored pencils for painting portraits. Several different techniques will be taught including Vertical Line, Scumbling and Burnishing. Emphasis will be on how to achieve smooth skin tones. Colored pencil basics, layering and correction will also be covered. Please bring an electric or battery operated pencil sharpener and an extension cord and any colored pencils you have (she will provide pencils for those who don’t have pencils).
