April General Meeting

Prez Sez

Spring has Sprung – Achooo!! I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather and green grass, but not sneezing as much as I am. The warmer weather and beautiful blooming plants tempts us to get out and paint a lovely landscape, so I will put up with the sneezing. The Colored Pencil Demo that I did for our March meeting was fun. I was sorry it fell during Spring Break and so there were fewer members there to participate than usual, but those in attendance were introduced to Colored Pencil techniques for doing skin in portraiture. Thanks to all in attendance for your enthusiasm for learning a new medium. Our Spring Show is this month so be sure to get your last minute strokes on those masterpieces and get them entered!

March Demo – Colored Pencil Techniques

Thank you so much to our own Debra Jones for your excellent demo on using colored pencils, and for sharing some of your beautiful work with us!  We all learned a lot, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

Creative Challenge for April:    Floral Splendor

April Demo – Oil Still Life
Diane Brahm
Houston Artist/ Oil, Pastel, Charcoal, Mixed Media Watercolor

Proudly embracing the beauty of classic realism in her painting and drawing, Diane is unafraid to challenge the purity of traditional art as she develops her contemporary approach to modern portraiture.

Academically trained in art at the University of Texas/Austin, her works show a solid sense of artistic capability. Classically mentored, her art has developed to reveal a fresh look at life. Brahm is adept handling oils, pastels, charcoal, and mixed media watercolor. Her art has won numerous awards in both regional and national shows, been published in national art magazines, and  is represented by several galleries.

She enjoys sharing her gifts by teaching art, currently at a suburban school in the Houston area. Diane also holds workshops for adults, teens, and school aged children. Her summers are filled with travel, always gathering visual information for future paintings, designs, and education.

Diane enjoys working with the local art community; pleased to judge and jury art shows, present insightful demonstrations, and teach mini-classes.  She has previously served on the boards of Houston Civic Arts Association, Houston Art Society, and West Houston Area Artists.

Spring Show & Competition, April 23rd

Our Spring Show is almost here! There is still time to enter the competition. Deadline for entries is April 18th. Visit our Show Page for more details.

Kingwood Public Library Art Changeout

We will be changing out the artwork at the Kingwood Library on Monday, May 16 at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone who has art currently hanging should come prepared to take your work home.

Any members who have work that you would like to hang on the library wall should bring it in!

Your work should be ready to hang, and you should be prepared to create a label for it with such information as the title of the work, framed dimensions, your name and contact information, and price.

If you have helped us as a volunteer this season you are eligible to bring samples of your work to be displayed at the library for viewing by (and sale to) the public.  Helping to take down the previous art pieces and to hang the new ones counts as volunteering!  Volunteers – the library will be closed at that time, so be sure to use the back door.

March General Meeting

The Prez Sez

Our new year is flashing past too quickly. The Spring Show is just around the corner on April 23rd at the Kingwood Christian Church. I hope everyone is putting the finishing touches on your latest masterpieces! In order the help our Show Committee, please remember that all art work has to have a wire and be framed securely, and that you must have paid your dues before show entry. If you would like to help with set up or take down, please get in touch with Becky or Amy – they would appreciate any help you can give. There is a lot of hard work that goes into putting on the shows, so our membership needs to recognize the need to step up and help out when it’s possible. I will be doing the Demo for March, and need to remind you all to bring an electric or battery operated pencil sharpener. I will be demoing Colored Pencil Techniques and there will be audience participation. Come prepared to learn by doing this month!

Creative Challenge – Meditations in Red

Jenny-Grigg-Meditations-in-Red (1)

Congratulations to Jenny Grigg as our Creative Challenge winner for February!

The Creative Challenge theme for March is:  Geometrics – The Shape of Things.

We want to give our members a say in determining our Creative Challenge theme.  So we will be asking for ideas to be submitted at the next meeting, with the final choice being made by a random draw.  We are looking forward to hearing your ideas!

February Demo – Hands-on Fiber Art

Thanks to Gika Rector for a terrific hands-on demo of fiber arts!  Everyone had fun, learned a lot and got to bring home a personal piece of fiber art!

Our Demo for March:  Debra Jones, Colored Pencils for Portraits

Debra studied fine art painting at the Baton Rouge Academy of Fine Arts. Shortly after school, she moved to Washington state where she painted and taught for 23 years. She taught art at the elementary and middle school levels for 10 years and opened her own art school where she taught privately for another 15 years before retiring and returning to Texas. Debra paints in most mediums, both wet and dry. When asked what her favorite is her answer is, “Whatever I’m working in at the time!” These days she mostly focuses on painting in Watercolor, Pastels and Colored Pencil. She is a firm believer that when it comes to art, we learn by doing and is open to any new experience in painting. She invites you to adopt her own personal motto – Don’t Be Afraid To Be Bold!!

The Demo will demonstrate the use of colored pencils for painting portraits. Several different techniques will be taught including Vertical Line, Scumbling and Burnishing. Emphasis will be on how to achieve smooth skin tones.  Colored pencil basics, layering and correction will also be covered. Please bring an electric or battery operated pencil sharpener and an extension cord and any colored pencils you have (she will provide pencils for those who don’t have pencils).
