All paid members will be invited to attend. Expect to receive your invitation Monday, February 14 or Tuesday, February 15.

Demo Artist for February – Art Talk

This month our demo artist will be our own Joel Salmons, giving an art talk on William Merrit Chase. Joel gives regular art talks for adults at the Lake Houston YMCA.

Joel Salmons

I am an American artist. I was raised in Texas, New Mexico, and California. The great Southwest
of my youth provides background, color, myth, and legend which informs my artistic
consciousness. I am a third generation Sam Houston State University graduate with a degree in
Art Education and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant from the Universities US Army
Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). As fate would have ROTC turned out to be the
breadwinner and after a whirlwind forty plus years career later I retired from the Pentagon and
wanted to get back to art. I applied for and got my dream retirement job as an art educator at the
National Gallery of Art in Washington DC where I have been educating for the last five years.
My art is recognized regionally and I’m on the board of Lake Houston Area Artist Art Guild.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 in the evening. We will send out more specific instructions closer to the event.

Unless otherwise specified, future general meetings will also be live at Homewood Suites.

January 2022 General Meeting

ZOOM Meeting – Tuesday, January 18, 2022

Meet and Greet starts at 6:30 p.m.
Meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.

Happy New Year! We hope each of you had a wonderful Holiday season.
Last November we all had high hopes that we would be able to go back to live meetings, starting in January. Unfortunately, the very high case numbers due to the Omicron variant have made us change our plan. According to our sources, we are probably at the peak of this wave, and it should start to diminish after another couple of weeks. That is the good news. The bad news is that it seems like a very bad time to get back together. So lets buckle up for at least one more ZOOM meeting, and hope that February brings us better news.

Demo Artist for January – Suzie Baker

In recent years, Suzie has gained national acclaim, earning a stellar reputation for her versatility as both a plein-air landscape artist as well as a studio painter of still lifes, figurative works, and portraits. In fact, in the Art Renewal Center’s 13th International Salon, she was recognized in both the Plein Air and Figurative Categories, which is a truly remarkable achievement. Among the many other awards she’s received recently are Best in Show and Artists Choice Awards at the Outdoor Painters Society’s Plein Air Southwest (2018), Best in Show at Shadows on the Teche (2018), the Irvine Museum Award and Montage Award at the 2018 Maui Plein Air Invitational, an Award of Excellence from American Women Artists’ Tucson Desert Art Museum Exhibition (2017), and the Artists’ Choice award at the 2017 Telluride Plein Air Festival. Her award-winning paintings have been featured in such publications as Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, and Southwest Art. Also known as a generous and uplifting teacher, Suzie has just produced her first art instruction video with Streamline Publishing.

General Meeting for February is Scheduled for Tuesday, February 15, 2022.

We very much hope that it will be an in-person meeting. We will keep you informed.
Keep watching the case numbers! We are.

November 2021 General Meeting and Art Show Results

Our November Zoom Meeting Will Be Tuesday, November 16, 2021

All paid LHAA members, plus art show entrants, will be invited to attend. This meeting will be your opportunity to find out the winners of our Fall Art Show and Competition. The judge will conduct a Zoom walkthrough, giving critiques of the artwork and explaining her decisions. These critiques are valuable both to the artist and to others watching, as a way of improving our work. Meet and Greet will start at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.
After the meeting, show results will be available to all through links we will send out. Judge’s comments on each piece will be included. And feel free to add your own comments!
Also: Check out the new button at the top of our website. The results and images of last spring’s show will be visible there!

Our Judge, Shirley Leago

.

Shirley was born in Wilson, Oklahoma but grew up in Houston, Texas.  She majored in fine arts and studied graphic design and painting at the University of Houston.  Dick Turner, the theorist, Loren Adams, the seascapes, Bob Wgant, the western artist master, and Lajos Markos, the western art and portrait master, have all had an influence on Shirley’s unique style that is like no other artist’s.  Shirley also enjoys painting other subject matter, such as portraits and still life, but her main interest rests with animals in their natural habitat.

One of Shirley’s passions has been teaching fine art painting for over 50 years.  She has taught painting theory and technique at Houston area studios for 30 years, and for the last 25 years, she has continued to teach at Texas Art Supply Baybrook in the Houston Bay Area.  She claims that an artist never quits learning, and by helping students, she continues to grow professionally with every problem that has to be solved in the classes.  Shirley teaches theory through various styles and media so that the student artists can choose how to present their work according to each one’s own personal style and vision.

Shirley has been an Advisor and Steering Judge for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Scholarship Program for 39 years.  Her painting “Lady’s Choice” was chosen for the cover of School Art Awards Presentation Program at the competition.  She has judged many local art shows and has performed many demonstrations for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for the teachers in the surrounding School districts involved in the Rodeo School art Scholarship program and workshops for art associations and clubs.  Shirley has been a judge for the Kingwood Art Show, the national competition for the National Society of Artists, Conroe Art League Show, Houston Arts Society, and the Pearland Art Show.  Shirley judged the Woodlands Art League November 5, 2016.  She judged the Brazosport Art League in Lake Jackson, Texas August 7th, 2017 and gave critique on August 18th, 2017.

Art Display at Skero’s

On October 27, several of our artists brought their artwork to display at Skero’s Furniture. We have quite a nice display there, and more than one artist has sold work that was hanging here! It’s a wonderful venue for the public to see your work. The next changeout of art will be either in December or early January of 2022. Any paid member is welcome to display artwork.
We will continue to let you know whenever there is an opportunity to show your artwork to the public. Visibility generates sales and helps our organization!

Our board has gotten together and decided that we would like to try getting together in person again, starting with our general meeting in January of 2022.           Teaching is an integral part of her creative work.  She teaches still life and portrait painting workshops around the country and internationally, as well as an online art mentorship program.

LHAA September 2021 General Meeting

About Our Meetings During the 2021-2022 Season

In looking through the responses from our membership about future meetings and art shows, it was clear that most members want to go back to meeting in person. We were all looking forward in May to a return to our live meetings. But the recent rise of the Delta variant of COVID has seen another huge spike in infections. In light of recent events, we have decided that it is wiser to continue our Zoom meetings, at least until the new year arrives. As much as we want to be able to be with all of you in person again, we care more about your health and the health of your families. That also means that our Fall 2021 Art Show will be virtual again. We continue to hope to return to our normal meetings soon!

Our September Zoom Meeting Will Be Tuesday, September 21, 2021

Meet and Greet will start at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting and artist demo starting at 7:00. Until we have more paid memberships for the new season, everyone who was a member last year will be invited again this month. Remember to pay your dues for the 2021-2022 season! Same low price!

September Demo Artist: Jessie Rasche “On the Farm” Oil Painting
