January 2017 General Meeting

Kingwood Library Art Changeout

The next changeout of the art at the Kingwood Public Library will be Monday, January 23, at 10:30 a.m.  The library will be closed to the public at that time, so please go to the back entrance.

Anyone who has art currently hanging should come prepared to take your work home.

Any members who have work that you would like to hang on the library wall should bring it in!

Your work should be ready to hang, and you should be prepared to create a label for it with such information as the title of the work, framed dimensions, your name and contact information, and price.

If you have helped us as a volunteer this season you are eligible to bring samples of your work to be displayed at the library for viewing by (and sale to) the public.  Helping to take down the previous art pieces and to hang the new ones counts as volunteering!

Important Note:
The artwork that you hang at the library is definitely for sale.  Your contact                   information will be posted with your work.  If a prospective buyer contacts you,               you will be able to deliver the artwork you sell at the next art changeout.  Do not             go to the library yourself to take your artwork down!  The librarians won’t know         who you are, so they won’t (and shouldn’t) just let you walk out the door with              it!)

Demo Artist for January – Sam Caldwell, Watercolor

Sam Caldwell
Texas State Artist 2004
Texas Ducks Unlimited Artist 2011-2012

Sam Caldwell’s coastal scenes of waterfowl, gamefish and people are prized by collectors from Texas to Maine.  Working primarily in transparent watercolor, the Houston native seeks to capture the atmosphere of the moment, as well as the color and drama inherent in his outdoor subjects.

Many of his recent images feature young hunters and fishers.  “Wildlife is primary in my work.” he says, but notes that “people are important elements of wildlife.”
Early in his career, Sam became involved in outdoor organizations like Ducks Unlimited and the Coastal Conservation Association.  He remains deeply involved in promoting coastal scenes as fine art, and uses his printed images to help the coast.  He is proud that the American Red Cross chose one of his paintings to help provide funds for 9-11 relief.  The Coastal Conservation Association has benefited from numerous Caldwell art prints.  Ducks Unlimited named Caldwell Texas State Artist for 2006-2007, and again for 2011 and 2012.

Sam is involved in many charitable organizations, including Cystic Fibrosis, Coastal Conservation Association, Operation Game Thief and the Texas Park & Wildlife Foundation.
Caldwell is also well known as an outdoor writer.  His co-authored book for the CCA, Change of Tides, A Narrative History of the Coastal Conservation Association, was named as Texas’ best outdoor book for 2000.
Sam Caldwell’s paintings and prints can be seen at his gallery and studio in Kingwood, Near Houston, and on his website at http://www.samcaldwell.com

LHAA Fall Art Show

fullsizerender-29

Thank you to everyone who helped with and or attended our fall 2016 art show and competition!  Although it was a little smaller than recent shows, it ran very smoothly and I think a good time was had by all!

Special thanks to those of you who came out to help and did not even have an entry in the show.  A few people that come to mind are Lela Neff, our fabulous head of hospitality who outdid herself, as usual; our fearless president, Debra Jones; our handy webmaster, Kristin Dumas; and Dave Berthold, who are always willing to help where needed.

Thanks as well to our judge, Liz Hill, who did a great job with our show and patiently critiqued every entry for any artist that was there.
Congratulations to our first time best of show winner, Carol Showalter, on her beautiful acrylic floral painting, Fresh Blooms (above).   Congratulations go out to all of our other ribbon winners as well!

As a reminder, all recipients of a first place, second place, third place, first honorable mention (yellow ribbon) and best of show ribbon  may advance to the convention show next summer.  If you did not receive a ribbon, you may enter the same entry one more time in the next show (spring 2017) and try your luck with another judge.

Our next show is scheduled for April 2017.  Becky and I have been show chairs for the last 5 years.  We have enjoyed doing this job and have both learned a lot in the process, but it is time for us to turn it over to someone new. We are looking for someone who is interested in shadowing us for the spring show and taking it over in the fall 2017.  If you are interested,  please let us or any board member know.  If we are not able to find replacements, we may not be able to have shows in the future.

Thanks again for all of those who came out and helped with the show!
Amy Conroy and Becky Hall

November Demo Artist – Debra Latham – Oil Portrait with Live Model

DEBRA LATHAM – HOUSTON AREA OLD MASTERS STYLE FINE ART PAINTER

Debra Latham - Biography

Debra Latham, a long time award-winning artist, has her work displayed in public & private collections in the United States and abroad.  Her representational work in rich oils can be described as impressionistic realism with a loose and expressive style — everything from landscape to figurative, plein air to studio pieces.

Debra is a native Texan and much of her inspiration comes from her travels & the family farmhouse in the Texas Hill Country. She teaches oil painting in Kingwood, Texas, where she lives with her husband.  She won her first of many art competitions in the 5th grade. At the age of 12 she received her first commission – to paint a mural on the gym wall of her middle school.  Debra recalls,”The only compensation was to skip basketball practice twice a week.  It was probably best.  I was a better painter than basketball player.”

Debra, a self-taught artist who studied with Jeff Hein, Dan Gerhartz, Rob Liberace, Clayton J. Beck & Jeff Legg, didn’t pursue becoming a professional artist until her 2 children were grown.  She credits her inspirations as John Singer Sargent, Sorrolla, Pino, David Leffel, Nydia Lazano, Daniel Gerhartz and Robert Coombs.
