LHAA Fall Art Show

fullsizerender-29

Thank you to everyone who helped with and or attended our fall 2016 art show and competition!  Although it was a little smaller than recent shows, it ran very smoothly and I think a good time was had by all!

Special thanks to those of you who came out to help and did not even have an entry in the show.  A few people that come to mind are Lela Neff, our fabulous head of hospitality who outdid herself, as usual; our fearless president, Debra Jones; our handy webmaster, Kristin Dumas; and Dave Berthold, who are always willing to help where needed.

Thanks as well to our judge, Liz Hill, who did a great job with our show and patiently critiqued every entry for any artist that was there.
Congratulations to our first time best of show winner, Carol Showalter, on her beautiful acrylic floral painting, Fresh Blooms (above).   Congratulations go out to all of our other ribbon winners as well!

As a reminder, all recipients of a first place, second place, third place, first honorable mention (yellow ribbon) and best of show ribbon  may advance to the convention show next summer.  If you did not receive a ribbon, you may enter the same entry one more time in the next show (spring 2017) and try your luck with another judge.

Our next show is scheduled for April 2017.  Becky and I have been show chairs for the last 5 years.  We have enjoyed doing this job and have both learned a lot in the process, but it is time for us to turn it over to someone new. We are looking for someone who is interested in shadowing us for the spring show and taking it over in the fall 2017.  If you are interested,  please let us or any board member know.  If we are not able to find replacements, we may not be able to have shows in the future.

Thanks again for all of those who came out and helped with the show!

November Demo Artist – Debra Latham – Oil Portrait with Live Model

DEBRA LATHAM – HOUSTON AREA OLD MASTERS STYLE FINE ART PAINTER

Debra Latham - Biography

Debra Latham, a long time award-winning artist, has her work displayed in public & private collections in the United States and abroad.  Her representational work in rich oils can be described as impressionistic realism with a loose and expressive style — everything from landscape to figurative, plein air to studio pieces.

Debra is a native Texan and much of her inspiration comes from her travels & the family farmhouse in the Texas Hill Country. She teaches oil painting in Kingwood, Texas, where she lives with her husband.  She won her first of many art competitions in the 5th grade. At the age of 12 she received her first commission – to paint a mural on the gym wall of her middle school.  Debra recalls,”The only compensation was to skip basketball practice twice a week.  It was probably best.  I was a better painter than basketball player.”

Debra, a self-taught artist who studied with Jeff Hein, Dan Gerhartz, Rob Liberace, Clayton J. Beck & Jeff Legg, didn’t pursue becoming a professional artist until her 2 children were grown.  She credits her inspirations as John Singer Sargent, Sorrolla, Pino, David Leffel, Nydia Lazano, Daniel Gerhartz and Robert Coombs.

We are also still asking for entries in the Mini Masterpieces.  There are 2 sizes this year – the 6X6 and also 12X12.  The proceeds from sales go toward our yearly scholarship, and the sales were very successful last year.  So as you’re finishing up on your entries, consider including one or several of these small pieces.  Becky has a few 12X12 canvases for sale at a good price if you’re interested.

October Demo Artist – Betsy Barry, Botanical Illustration

I am an artist originally from the New England area, living and creating in Kingwood, Texas.

While I am thankful for modern technology and our ability to connect to others around the world, I feel as though through technology we have distanced ourselves from the living, growing things all around us. I hope to reconnect the viewers of my artwork with the simple, natural things we come across everyday, but that we often overlook.

In 2015, I completed the Distance Learning Diploma Course with the Society of Botanical Artists London.

Creative Challenge Update

NOTE: The creative is being changed up this year! We well be assigning fewer challenges, 3 throughout the year, to offer more time for creativity and expression. Another change will be that we will no longer be voting for our favorite, but instead posting all the creations as a collection on the website.

Our new theme is “Falling Leaves”, and the due date is the November General Meeting on the 15. Remember, it does not have to be just a painting or drawing. It can be a collage, or a painting on a leaf, or a sculpture or whatever you feel is the best way to express “Falling Leaves”. Be creative and share your creation!
